Lunch Meeting with Director of the China Economic Centre of the International Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China

On 7th April, European Chamber President Joerg Wuttke invited Peng Yong, director of the China Economic Cooperation Centre (CECC) of the International Department of the Central Committee of Communist Party of China (CPC) to a lunch meeting to discuss the recent developments in trade relations between the EU and China.

President Wuttke updated Director Peng on the business performance of European companies in China during 2020, and commended the efforts made by the Chinese Government to bring the epidemic under control. President Wuttke said that, thanks to the quick recovery of the Chinese economy, European companies in China were able to achieve great financial results for the year, with some companies even recording more positive results than in previous years. President Wuttke went on to note that European business in China is now however very concerned by the recent developments in relations between the EU and China. He said such tension creates uncertainties and put European companies in China between a rock and a hard place.

Director Peng thanked President Wuttke for the invitation and congratulated European business for their very positive financial results in 2020. The director said the CPC and Chinese Government is committed on further opening up and will make all efforts to support foreign investment in China. He said, to bring the COVID-19 outbreak under control, China took the most suitable approach for China, which was different to that of many other countries.

The two sides also exchanged views on the current issues between the EU and China. They agreed that, as there will always be challenges between the EU and China, it is important that the EU and China work closely to develop a sustainable and win-win relationship.
