On 13th May, the Department of Development Research of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT) and the European Chamber co-organised an online roundtable on the situation for European business in China under the recent COVID-19 containment measures.

On the European Chamber side, the session was joined by 110 participants from 80 member companies across various industries. A total of 17 chairs and representatives from 13 working groups spoke and discussed the challenges faced by the European community in China due to the stringent COVID-19 containment policy, the most significant being the massive uncertainty it has created for business.

During the meeting, members called for the relaxation of pandemic control measures in all aspects, resuming production and mobility in order to restore the supply chain, provide more predictability and hence rebuild business confidence in a timely manner. Members also provided recommendations on how to improve the practicality of the current closed-loop management and nationwide alignment of COVID-19 prevention standards so as to increase operational efficiency.

Officials from the National Development and Reform Commission, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Commerce, People’s Bank of China and General Administration of Customs attended the meeting.
