On 5th July, the European Chamber hosted a seminar on use of dispute resolution mechanisms for the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Due to many BRI projects taking place in high-risk areas with questionable levels of stability, questions regarding the use of legal protections to ensure companies are protected in case of disputes when engaging in BRI projects. Responding to these concerns, in January 2018, the Supreme People’s Court announced that new international commercial courts would be established to handle disputes related to BRI projects. Over the course of the seminar, the Chamber addressed many of these developments and causes for concern and provided information to international businesses looking to invest in BRI projects in and outside China.
