As 2022 comes to a close, China’s economic outlook is the most uncertain since the country first embarked upon its programme of reform and opening more than four decades ago. Its COVID strategy has been put to the test, with nationwide outbreaks of the highly transmissible Omicron variant disrupting business operations on an unprecedented scale throughout the year. Other significant internal challenges include China’s mounting debt crisis, the unravelling of its real estate sector, demographic headwinds and stalling consumption growth.

European Chamber Annual General Meeting 2022

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China will take place on Thursday 26th May 2022 in Beijing at a yet to be confirmed venue. The AGM will be available for members to join both online and in person. At this year's AGM, a by-election will be held for members to elect a treasurer (1 position) for the remainder of the term in office (1 year).

On June 1st, 2020, the Chinese Central Committee and the State Council jointly released the Overall Plan for the Construction of Hainan Free Trade Port (“the Masterplan”), a large-scale plan to transform the entire island province into a free trade port (FTP) – making it the largest special free trade zone in China. The Masterplan laid out a series of special policies for Hainan – liberalization of trade of goods and services, facilitation of investment, opening-up of key sectors, and free exchange of people, capital, and data. Coupled with preferential policies of the Hainan Bo’ao Lecheng International Medical Tourism Pilot Zone, Hainan is expected to be the rising hub of new investment and business opportunities.
