Secretary General Speaks at Global Times Leader Roundtable

2017-07-25 | Beijing

Government officials and some 25 multinational corporations and business organizations attended the Global Times Leader Roundtable.

Former Vice Minister Wei gave his view of the three current mainstream views in China regarding FDI: 1) China has gone too far and no longer needs FDI, 2) China is closing up, and 3) China needs both more reform, opening and more FDI. Following his presentation other officials spoke and the general consensus was that China will continue to open and reform and more FDI is needed.  Individual officials gave examples of where this is happening and the FTZs and  OBR was highlighted again as an opportunity.

Adam Dunnett, Secretary General of the Chamber responded that while some companies may be attracted to preferential policies in the short term, the best way to improve the investment environment is through institutional improvements such as consistent application in the rule of law, transparency, and predictability as well as improvements to the ‘softer’ aspects of the business environment for employees such as air quality, access to schools,  and hospitals. Other participants brought up similar issues, including the Cybersecurity Law.
