On 19th October, European Chamber Vice President Jens Eskelund attended the Qingdao Multinational Summit and gave a keynote speech themed ‘Enhancing China’s Investment Climate’. Vice President Eskelund acknowledged the Chinese Government’s achievements in reform and opening up, and further touched upon areas needing further improvement, including: market access (beyond the Negative List); unequal and discretionary treatment; regulatory complexity; and state-owned enterprises and competitive neutrality. He also provided constructive comments and suggestions on how to further improve China’s investment climate.

As a member of the advisory committee of the Summit, Vice President Eskelund also attended a meeting with leaders of the organising committee on 18th October. Meanwhile, the Chamber’s Head of Government Affairs, Ziting Zhang, attended a closed-door meeting on 19th October at the Summit on the Implementation Rules of the Foreign Investment Law.

The Qingdao Multinational Summit was jointly organised by the Ministry of Commerce and the Shandong Provincial People's Government. Vice Premier Han Zheng made an address to the opening ceremony. Themed ‘Multinationals and China’, the summit aimed to promote dialogue, cooperation and mutual benefit. It was geared towards leaders of multinational corporations (MNCs) and will become a new platform for China to further opening-up. A series of activities such as closed-door meetings, parallel forums, MNC road shows, promotional events and exhibitions took place during the summit.
