Meeting with Minister Counsellor from the Delegation of the European Union on GI

2019-11-07 | Shanghai

On 7th November, representatives from the European Union Chamber of Commerce IPR and Agricultural, Food & Beverages working groups met with Mr. Gunther Marten, Minister Counsellor from the Delegation of the European Union, EUIPO IP Attache.

Mr. Marten provided an update on the newly signed EU-China bilateral Agreement on the Cooperation on, and Protection of, Geographical Indications (GI Agreement). The bilateral agreement protects 100 European Geographical Indications (GI) in China and 100 Chinese GI in the EU against imitations and usurpation. Mr. Marten also called for a better enforcement on GI, and highlighted the difficulties ahead as there is still a great misunderstanding of GI in China, e.g. registering GI for raw materials such as apples.
