European Chamber President Jörg Wuttke was invited to speak first, and outlined for Vice Premier Hu how European Chamber members had supported China in bringing the COVID-19 outbreak under control, as well as the recent difficulties in bringing foreign teachers back to China. In addition, besides presenting the latest European Business in China Position Paper, President Wuttke mentioned that, according to the Chamber’s latest Business Confidence Survey, European businesses are very committed to the Chinese market and they are “in China, for China”. He added that it is therefore very important for China to continue to further reform and open up to provide a level playing field for all market players, which will in turn lead to sustainable economic growth. Representatives from other chambers of commerce also outlined their members’ support to China during the outbreak of COVID-19 and the issues faced by their members. Vice Premier Hu thanked all the participants for their inputs. He also recognised the more than 800 recommendations raised in the European Chamber’s annual Position Paper and welcomed further suggestions from the European business community. The vice premier spoke of the important role of foreign investment in China and the Chinese economy, in particular during the COVID-19 outbreak. He went on to reiterate China’s commitment to further reform and opening up.
