European Chamber Shanghai GM Meets Mr. Chen Jing, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of Shanghai Municipal People Congress, Chairman of Shanghai People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries

On 17th May 2022, European Chamber Shanghai Chapter held an online meeting with Mr. Chen Jing, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of Shanghai Municipal People Congress, Chairman of Shanghai People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries (SPAFFC). Dr. Ioana Kraft, General Manager of European Chamber Shanghai Chapter introduced the Chamber and addressed pressing issues encountered by members during the COVID-19 outbreak in Shanghai to Mr. Chen.

Dr. Kraft indicates that while re-opening measures and work resumption policies has been issued by Shanghai government, the implementation varied a lot on district and community level. In fact, this poses certain hurdles that disappointed those who should benefit from the released re-opening policies. Many operational barriers still make it difficult for companies to resume work as they should. Work and production resumption measures need to be implemented uniformly. Dr. Kraft also raised compelling concerns faced by European business, such as potential outflow of expatriates, loss of trust from the marketplace, fear of being transported to makeshift hospitals and lack of international flights for foreign employees.

Mr. Chen pointed out the Chamber’s Flash Survey results in early May has been reported to Shanghai municipal leaders. And they have paid close attention to the results and asked relevant departments to communicate and address these issues. Mr. Chen acknowledged the Chamber’s works and practices, especially appreciated and impressed by the Chamber’s report and suggestions on revision of Foreign Investment Law conducted three years ago. He forwarded and presented those detailed recommendations to the National People’s Congress in Beijing in that year.

At the end of the meeting, both sides reach consensus on working together in the future to make Shanghai a beautiful and strong city again.
