European Tour 2022-23 Meeting with Member of the European Parliament (MEP) and Vice-Chair of the Committee on International Trade (INTA) Marie-Pierre Vedrenne

On 9th January, the European Chamber of Commerce in China met with Member of the European Parliament (MEP) and Vice-Chair of the Committee on International Trade (INTA) Marie-Pierre Vedrenne in Aloft Brussels Schuman. The meeting mainly focused on bilateral relationship between the EU and China. Both sides talked about crucial issues such as diversification, dependencies, Taiwan issue etc.

The meeting started with the introduction of PP by JW and he updated all participants on recent situations in China. He mentioned that some European businesses are looking at alternative markets in the world, but some of these decisions on diversification are economically driven and others are political.

MPV remarked that the European Parliament is currently struggling with the relationship with China and one of the contributing factors is that there is no contact with Chinese institutional stakeholders, which is needed. The EU is currently working on a defensive toolbox but it’s not enough.

On investments, European businesses see a big transformation of investments that could potentially bring opportunity but there are still lots of question marks on how European financial institutions can tap into that (in particular asset management).
