European Chamber Met with Wuxi Vice Mayor

On 7th March 2023, the European Chamber Shanghai Chapter General Manager, Mr Steven Basart, met with Mr Zhou Wendong, Vice Mayor of Wuxi. The meeting was also joined by Mr Yuan Kaikun, Deputy Director of the Wuxi Bureau of Commerce, and Ms Chen Ping, Director of the Wuxi Investment Promotion Centre.

Vice Mayor Zhou gave an overview of Wuxi and the steady cooperation between Wuxi and European companies thus far. In 2022, Wuxi’s GDP amounted to 1485 billion RMB, the 14th highest in China, and its GDP per capita was 198,000 RMB. As of January 2023, 1,003 European companies have invested in the city, with a total investment of 13.35 billion US dollars.

The vice mayor expressed his wish for even greater collaboration with the European Chamber this year, and welcomed European Chamber delegates to Wuxi.

Following the vice mayor’s introduction, Mr Steven Basart provided an overview of the European Chamber, which has over 1,700 member companies, with many of them based in Yangtze River Delta region. The Shanghai Chapter is the largest chapter and hosts around 90 events every year, including the Annual Investment Conference and Sustainable Business Award ceremony, as well as regular government-industry dialogues. The European Chamber publishes its Business Confidence Survey every year in June, its nationwide position paper in September, and published its local position paper last month.

Mr Steven Basart expressed his interest in further collaboration with Wuxi. The European Chamber values sustained interaction with local governments and welcomes Wuxi to participate in Shanghai Chapter’s events. Both sides agreed to follow up on future cooperation opportunities.
