Boao Health Food Science Conference & Expo (FHE)

The FHE took place from 22 - 25 February in Boao, Hainan. Mr. Chen Huaiyu, Vice-Governor of Fujian Province, gave the introduction speech, emphasising that the business environment and policy support in Hainan can provide opportunities for investment in health and food industry.

During the conference, Mr. Jia Ning, Director-General of Hainan Provincial Medical Insurance Bureau, introduced the pilot schemes in Hainan Free Trade Port and Boao Hope City. He emphasised that Boao Hope City have the potentials to carry out real world study and speed up approval procedure for FSMPs listed overseas if national policy permits.

Mr. Chen Bo, Division Director of Division of Monitoring and Assessment, Department of Food Safety Standard, Risk Monitoring and Assessment, National Health Commission, introduced the policy direction of new ingredients approval. Guarding the bottom line of food safety and enhancing the nutrition and health among the population is the guiding principle in the approval of new food ingredients. Currently, there are nine pilot substances and a batch of declared substances in the approval procedure.

Ms. Song Yan, Director of Risk Assessment Office III, China National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment, introduced the requirements for safety evaluation of new food ingredients. At present, China has already approved a total of 76 new food ingredients between 1987 and 2007, and a total of 160 new food ingredients since 2008.

Professor Shi Hanping, Director of Clinical Nutrition Department of Beijing Shijitan Hospital, introduced the current situation of oncology nutrition in China. At present, about 50% of patients have malnutrition at the time of malignancy diagnosis, and about 40% of hospitalised tumor patients have malnutrition during treatment.
