Shanghai Chapter Roundtable with Pudong Executive Vice Mayor Yang Chao

On 20th November, the European Chamber, in collaboration with the Pudong Commission of Commerce, held the Pudong New Area Government Dialogue with European Companies. A delegation of European Chamber members attended, including the Chairman of the European Chamber Shanghai Chapter, Carlo D’Andrea, and the Pudong Executive Vice Mayor Yang Chao.   

The European Chamber delegation was composed of representatives from 21 European companies, representing various sectors including automotive, chemical, finance, food and beverage, fashion, manufacturing, pharmaceutical and healthcare, sports and technology.

The dialogue was moderated by Zhang Hao, the deputy director of the district Commission of Commerce. Lin Tingjun, director of the district Commission of Commerce, participated in the dialogue, along with other 17 bureaus and departments from the Pudong New Area government such as the Customs, Commission of Development and Reform, Commission of Science and Economy, Intellectual Property Bureau, Environment and Ecology Bureau.

The European Chamber Shanghai Chairman delivered the opening remarks and expressed his appreciation to Vice Mayor Yang and the Pudong government for always remaining open and pragmatic towards the European Chamber’s constructive feedback. European companies would like to continue to contribute their experiences and recommendations to Pudong’s high-quality development and its goal of building the ‘Five Centres’. In particular, Chairman D’Andrea expressed the hope to further strengthen future cooperation with Pudong government, in particular on intellectual property right (IPR) protection and the healthy growth of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Member representatives had the opportunity to raise specific challenges facing European companies, as well as to provide recommendations and insights on a wide range of topics including including IPR, decarbonisation and sustainability, the opening-up of the financial sector, urban development, sports and education, regional headquarter strategy, equal treatment, Free Trade Zones and E-commerce. Relevant department and bureaus of the Pudong government responded to the members.

In his closing remarks, Pudong Executive Vice Mayor Yang Chao briefed the attendees on recent policy updates and next-step industrial plans. He stressed that the Pudong government will continue to provide support to companies’ development.

The European Chamber and the Pudong government look forward to continuing regular exchange and strengthening cooperation. To conclude, the European Chamber Shanghai Chapter presented the Position Paper 2023/2024 to the Pudong Executive Vice Mayor Yang Chao.
