ABB: Smart technologies shape the future industrial landscape of Chongqing

Smart technologies will be key to Chongqing’s efforts to generate new industrial growth, increase manufacturing efficiency, and improve industrial competitiveness. Claudio Facchin, President of ABB’s Power Grids division, shared these insights at the 13th Annual Meeting of Chongqing Mayor’s Interna-tional Economic Advisory Council (CMIA).

In his report presented at the event which was held today, Facchin said that with better integration of smart technologies into the economy, Chongqing can make a quantum leap in industrial development and emerge in a better position to embrace the opportunities of the Energy and Fourth Industrial Rev-olutions.

“Smart technologies will not only facilitate the transformation of traditional industries into highly innovative, high-end, high-quality business, but also enable Chongqing to develop clusters of strate-gic new industries,” said Claudio Facchin. “The result will be the creation of a complete, intelligent manufacturing value chain, capable of sustaining strong rates of high-quality economic growth for Chongqing.”

Facchin added that the rapid industrialization and urbanization of Chongqing had posed serious chal-lenges to its environment and natural resources. Smart power and automation technologies, such as renewables grid integration, will be critical for Chongqing to achieve low-carbon economic growth

According to Facchin, many of ABB’s smart technologies, as well as the company’s unified, cross-industry digital offerings – ABB Ability™, are in good positions to support Chongqing to transform and upgrade its industry sectors and generate incremental value addition.

The ABB digital substation, which deploys key ABB Ability™ based technologies, is a key element of next-generation power grids. This solution is essential for Chongqing to upgrade its existing power infrastructure, so as to ensure safe and efficient operation of its power grids.

As one of the most important automobile manufacturing bases in China, Chongqing has also speeded up the development of new energy vehicles. This has brought opportunities for ABB’s e-mobility tech-nologies, such as flash-charging of high-capacity buses.

Industrial robots are an important enabler for smart manufacturing. ABB has established a robotics application center in Chongqing, which is focused on the rapidly growing demand for robots in the production of automobiles, 3C products, equipment and consumer goods. The company aims to help customers improve flexibility, efficiency, safety and reliability, while create factories of the future that are connected and collaborative.

Chongqing has long been an important manufacturing as well as research & development base for ABB in China. ABB now has two factories, a regional service center, a branch office, and an engineering cen-ter in Chongqing. In 2018 ABB celebrated the 20th anniversary of its transformer factory in Chongqing, as well as the inauguration of ABB’s new robotics application center in the city, which was set up to meet the fast-growing need for industrial robots to upgrade manufacturing in southwest China. Last year ABB signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Chongqing municipality. The MoU aims to boost mutual cooperation in industry, energy, transport and infrastructure.
