Letter Of Intent with the China Centre for Urban Development

The agreement further intends to facilitate in-depth discussions on major trends of urbanisation, and seek solutions in addressing urbanisation challenges, and was signed during the 2014 China International Urbanisation Forum, 18th – 20th April, Shanghai.

The topic of urbanisation has been a lobbying priority of the European Chamber for the past few years, especially since the signing of the EU-China Sustainable Urbanisation Partnership, May 2012. Since then, the Shanghai Chapter has launched an Urbanisation Series of events, and Beijing will soon follow suit with events being planned for the year ahead. An Urbanisation Task Force is also planned for launch in 2014, in the hope of better responding to China’s Urbanisation drive and to address the opportunities and challenges that face its members.

The Letter of Intent was signed by European Chamber President, Mr. Davide Cucino, and China Centre for Urban Development, Director-General, Mr. Li Tie, in the presence of Mr. Xu ShaoShi, Chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission. This signing comes roughly one month after the State Council unveiled the comprehensive Urbanisation Plan for the 2014-2020 period, which rightly places emphasis on a human-centred and environmentally-focussed approach.

The European Chamber supported a particular seminar within the annual Forum, on the New Model of EU-China Urbanisation Cooperation, with European Chamber President, Davide Cucino, providing opening remarks and, Ms. Lucy Shi, giving a presentation as Chair of the Shanghai Construction Working Group.
