Green Dam postponement applauded
Wang Anna, Global Times, 2nd July 2009

AmCham-China told the Global Times yesterday that it welcomed the decision by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology to postpone the mandatory installation of the Green Dam-Youth Escort software on all computers.

"We believe this is a positive development, which is consistent with international best practices and is good for Chinese consumers, the government and the business community," it said in a statement.

In addition, the chamber "recognizes and supports the use of effective and responsible parental controls” to protect children from inappropriate material contained on the Internet, it said.

The European Union Chamber of Commerce in China said yesterday it was encouraged by the announcement and described the decision as a "pragmatic solution."

On June 15, AmCham-China and 18 other industry and trade associations called on the ministry to reevaluate its requirement for the software to be installed on all computers sold on the mainland.

On Friday, the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China and 21 other associations sent a letter to Premier Wen Jiabao asking him to reconsider the policy, Caijing magazine reported.

Several computer makers said they would install the software on computer hard drives or provide it on a separate disc packaged with each computer, the report said.
