As the world is getting more urbanized, how cities are being designed and managed will fundamentally influence whether they are ‘livable’ cities. In China more than in any other country in the world, cities will require different ways of moving their population with an increased role for public transport, different ways of shared transport, and in many cases different types of restrictions on car usage.

Together with city governments and consumers, the car industry is a key part of this development, both as far as passenger cars and commercial vehicles (trucks and buses) are concerned. Only a continuous dialogue between the auto industry and the other stake holders involved will bring the right means of mobility to the city. At the same time cities should provide an environment which is suitable for these new ideas and technologies.

China is the country with the largest concentration of large cities in the world, with currently more than 88 cities with over 5 million inhabitants, and with 6 supercities (Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Chongqing and Chengdu) with over 15 million inhabitants. China is also by far the largest automotive market in the world, and is now approaching the state of the art technology levels of more developed markets. Not only will the global development impact the Chinese market, but China should be in a position to shape or influence this development, both in urbanization and mobility.

In the 2014 Auto Forum we will address - from the perspectives of government officials and city leaders, industry executives and renowned academics - how city design and mobility will affect China’s auto industry, whether this will require new competences and business models, and to which degree China could be a part and a driver of the changes which are occurring at global level.

Session Two: The Role of Government in Smart Cities
With currently an urban population of 600 million, China is expected to have over 800 million urban residents by around 2020. Over 10% of the world population will live in Chinese cities, many of them very large, - and unless something changes - congested and polluted. China, more than any other country in the world, wants to drastically change the ways its cities are designed and managed, and how mobility is organized. This could bring valuable lessons and insights for other parts of the world which face similar challenges. This session will look at the role of government in designing and running sustainable cities, in improving the mobility of its population and how government sees the role of the automotive industry in this process.

Across the globe, and in China as well, consumers will most likely set the agenda for the changes ahead, and it will be important to monitor and take into account their often diverging - and changing - expectations in terms of mobility, reduced emissions and pollution, sustainability in general, connectivity, etcetera. This session will bring together some industry trendsetters with consumers in a lively Q&A session which will explore the consumer trends of the future.
