On 24th February 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin began a full-scale military invasion of Ukraine and demanded Kyiv’s army lay down its weapons, the largest conventional military attack in Europe since the Second World War.

Europe has been highly dependent on Russian pipeline gas for its energy supply for years; over 40 per cent of the region’s natural gas is imported from Russia. With the Ukraine crisis escalating and tougher sanctions being imposed on Russia by the west, the supply of Russian natural gas to Europe will most likely be halted, leading to fuel shortages for many Europeans.

At the end of 2021, Omicron, the fifth highly significant variant of the original SARS-COV-2, was designated a ‘variant of concern’ by the World Health Organization (WHO), based on its transmissibility and the severity of illness it can cause. South Africa, where Omicron was first reported, was the focus of the world’s attention as the number of infections surged within a few weeks. The new variant is now prevalent worldwide.
