Dear Members of the Auto components Working Group,
The European Chamber is delighted to invite you to join the next Auto Components Working Group Meeting on Connected Vehicles and Data Protection: a comparison between the EU and China approaches, at 10:00-11:30 am, 28 August 2020 in our office.
During the sharing session, Ms. Serena Du (Bird & Bird) and Ms. Tiantian Ke (Bird & Bird) will conduct an interactive discussion focusing on EU Data Regulator (EDPB) Publishes Draft Guidelines on Connected Vehicles. Connected vehicles and autonomous driving technologies hold the hope to transform the transportation in large. Almost no one questions the idea that driverless and autonomous vehicles are the future. This is manifested by the venture capital betting on autonomous driving start-ups, every auto manufacturer in existence is working on their version of the driverless auto. Recently, as the technology advances and becomes that much closer to widespread use - many of the auto manufacturers are now actively testing their platforms on open roads.
Connected vehicles generate huge volumes of data. The data processing in such a context is taking place in a complex ecosystem. The challenge is, for each stakeholder, to incorporate the “protection of personal data” dimension from the product design phase, and to ensure that car users enjoy transparency and control in relation to their data. Such an approach helps to strengthen user confidence, and thus the long-term development of those technologies. On 7 February 2020 the European Data Protection Board ("EDPB") published its guidelines on the processing of personal data in the context of connected vehicles and mobility related applications. The guidelines were open for public consultation. In this meeting, we are going to take a closer look at the guidelines to clarify the challenges each stakeholder is facing and what are the promising directions to look into from the following perspectives:
- Scope and definition of Personal Data
- On lawful basis e-privacy leads
- Transparency
- Privacy by Design & Local Storage
- Security of processing
- Individual rights
- Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIA)
- Topics not tackled
