A recent list detailing China’s 'top 10 manufacturing cities’ ranked Nanjing as Number No. 1. In the corresponding list of ‘top manufacturing provinces’ Jiangsu was ranked No. 2.

These figures were jointly issued by the ‘Education Ministry’s Committee of Philosophy and Social Science Projects’ and the ‘Foundation of National Natural Science’ at the 4th China Science and Technology Policy and Management Academic Seminar which was held at Nanjing University of Information Engineering.

The Top 10 Provinces for manufacturing industry were identified in order as follows: Shanghai, Jiangsu, Guangdong, Shandong, Zhejiang, Tianjin, Liaoning, Beijing, Henan, Hebei The Top 10 Cities listed in order are: Nanjing, Suzhou, Shijiazhuang, Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Kunming, Qingdao, Guangzhou, Jinan, Wuhan. This is the fourth year running that Nanjing has ranked No. 1.

According to the briefing, ranking is based on national statistics, capacity for economic creativity, capacity for developing sustainable technology, energy efficiency and measures taken to promote environmental protection.

On the list, Nanjing ranks as No. 6 in terms of capacity for economic creativity within the manufacturing industry, as No. 1 in terms of capacity for technological creativity, and as No. 5 in terms of environmental protection. It was concluded in this seminar that the strong position of manufacturing in eastern China can is by far the strongest in China and that urban manufacturing industry has developed without balance, with this in mind it was indicated that over coming years there will be an increase in polices aimed at promoting China’s western and central areas.
The committee also considers that in comparison with the world's manufacturing centers, China's manufacturing industry in economic development, scientific and technological innovation has had a comparative advantage while its use of resources and environmental protection still needed to be improved. The committee stated that by 2015, they expect China's manufacturing output to rank first in the world.

The Committee was comprised of more than 60 experts from around the country. Professor Li Lianshui, leader of the project, chief expert, and the professor at Nanjing Information Engineering University said that the future development of the Nanjing’s manufacturing should put emphasis on quality control and increasing the added value. For the development of Nanjing to continue the city needs more investment in technology, it needs to improve the efficiency of scientific research activities, it needs to attract more innovative teams and finally it needs to lead the creativity of a whole industry based on key major technological innovation.
