China, EU Agree to Hold Summit Soon

China and the European Union (EU) agreed on 27th January to hold a summit between the two sides at an early date.

It was announced by visiting Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso at a press conference following their talks at the EU headquarters. The date for the summit has not been decided yet.

Both sides also agreed to hold the 2nd China-EU high-level forum on economy and trade in April this year.

The EU-China summit, which had originally been scheduled to be held in Lyon, France, on 1st December last year, was postponed after French President Nicolas Sarkozy, whose country held the then EU presidency, insisted on meeting Dalai Lama.

Premier Wen arrived in Brussels on the evening of 26th January for an official visit to the EU headquarters.
