200 Attend Inaugural Insight China Seminar in Beijing

The European Chamber kicked off a new quarterly series of macroeconomic seminars, entitled Insight China, on 24th February, with an audience of more than 200 people gathering for the Insight China Spring 2009 Session at the China World Hotel in Beijing.

David Dollar, Country Director of the World Bank in China, Xiaonian Xu, Professor of Economics and Finance at the China Europe International Business School and Vivek Arora, IMF Senior Resident Representative in China shared their views on the implications of the current financial crisis for China and their thoughts on how the Asian powerhouse can once again kick-start growth.

The afternoon's discussion centered around the 4 trillion yuan stimulus package recently announced by the Chinese government, with the panel of leading economists agreeing that spending should be focused on areas of social security such as education, healthcare and the pensions system. A lively debate between the three guests was moderated by Chamber Vice President Jacques de Boisséson.

Throughout 2009, the Chamber aims to bring its members the views of the best economists in China through these quarterly Insight China sessions. The next event in the series, the Insight China Summer 2009 Session, is scheduled for late May. Visit the Chamber website (www.europeanchamber.com.cn) for more information.
