Safeguard the Earth and Promote ‘Zero Waste City’ Development – Welcome Sharing of International Best Practices and Successful Cases

Today is the 51st Earth Day. As countries around the world initiated lockdown and quarantine procedures to deal with the COVID-19 outbreak, the decrease in human activities often led to a rejuvenation of nature. Therefore, the theme of this year’s Earth Day in China is 'Treasure the Planet, People and Nature Co-exist in Harmony'. We are facing numerous challenges to the future of humanity and the environmental systems that safeguard the liveability of our world. The time for citizens to call for greater action globally to tackle our common environmental crisis is now. Only with every country making an effort can we achieve sustainability and the harmonious existence of people and nature.

In recent years, China has made progress in developing the 'Zero Waste City' concept. In light of these advancements, the European Chamber Environment Working Group hosted an hour-long conference call with the Solid Waste Division of the Solid Waste and Chemicals Department, Ministry of Ecology and Environment (MEE), on 2nd April. The main topic was ‘Zero Waste City’ pilots, while other issues such as implementation plans, key development regions and expert team development were touched upon.

This discussion revealed the demand in pilot cities nationwide for innovation and examples of best practices. The MEE has indicated it welcomes input on international technologies and successful case studies in building ‘Zero Waste Cities’, including but not limited to areas such as air, water, soil, noise pollution, clean production, comprehensive utilisation and recycling, and environment monitoring.
