On March 4th, The City Evaluation Centre of 'Jiangsu City Development Research Institute' issued its 2008 Development Report of Jiangsu Province's major cities. Beginning in 2004, in depth research and evaluation has been carried out annually by Jiangsu City Development Research Institute, focusing on the potential for sustainable development among 13 key cities in Jiangsu. The sustainable development rate of a city is judged on two levels: sustainable development status and sustainable development capacity. In last year’s evaluation, Nanjing was ranked third in terms of sustainable development status (with a score of 39.7 points) while ranking first place in terms of sustainable development capacity (with a score of 32.7 points). Nanjing acheived an overall ranking of second in last year's evaluation report.

Professor Zhang Feng who is behind this newly issued report, commented that based on 15 sustainable development indexes, Nanjing scored highest out of all Jiangsu cities in terms of  economic structure, living quality of its citizens, science and technology and environmental protection. He also pointed out that Nanjing ranked second with regards to its economic growth index. Throughout 2007, Nanjing made good use of its position as Jiangsu's political, cultural and economic center making steps to ensure that it develops a sustainable model for growth.
