EU Expresses Condolences to China Over Earthquake
Ljubljana, 12th May 2008

The Slovenian EU presidency expressed on Monday its deepest condolences to the people of China for the massive loss of life and devastation caused by the earthquake in southwest China's Sichuan Province.

"We share the grief of all those who have lost loved ones and express our heartfelt sympathies to those who have been injured and suffered heavy material losses in this catastrophe," the presidency said.

A 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck close to densely populated areas in Sichuan province, including the capital Chengdu, shortly before 2:30 PM local time on Monday. More than 8,500 people are believed to have died in the catastrophe.
