Beijing gets wireless Internet access

The "Wireless Beijing" program started test operations on 25th June in the capital. The program aims to provide citizens with wireless Internet access in much of downtown Beijing. During the Olympics, citizens and visitors can enjoy the service for free.

The first phase of the Wireless Beijing program covers around 100 square kilometers: much of downtown including the area along the second and third ring roads, CBD, Financial Street, Zhongguancun district and Wangjing. Residents can use laptop, PDA or mobile phone with wireless Internet function to get wireless access to the Internet at any time. The surfing speed will not lower than 512k.

The Wireless Beijing program will implement the plan in three phases. The first phase, now under trail operations, will provide service to the Olympics. The second phase is scheduled to finish in 2009 and will cover all the area within the fifth ring road. The final phase will be completed in 2010 with the creation of a citywide wireless network. The service will fee-based after the Olympics.
