Project to build school in quake zone Go back »

2008-07-18 | Southwest China

Following the devastating earthquake on 12th May 2008 and in consultation and cooperation with the responsible political and education authorities (see Memorandum of Understanding here) of Anxian County and Baolin Town, PA International (www.pa-international.org) decided to construct a new permanent middle school in Baolin Town, Sichuan.

Baolin, at 100 kilometers from the epicenter of the earthquake, has a population of 16,000, is located in a badly accessible area and is confronted with a situation whereby 70% of houses and the only three schools in the town are unusable.

Thanks to a special steel and concrete-based structural design, similar to that of the Community Home in Aceh, Indonesia which PA International built following the tsunami of 2004 (www.lambrineuyayasan.org), it will be possible to construct the school for its approximately 450 pupils within three months of the start of construction.

Like PA International's previous projects in Indonesia and Pakistan, it is unable to execute this important project without the help of the business and local community; however, in the event that a sufficient number of sponsors decide to contribute to the project, the adjacent primary school for 650 pupils will also be re-built. Companies are invited to either offer funding or to offer goods and materials for the school in kind.
