Construction of Underground Hunan Road to Initiate in the Second Half of 2008

Last year, retailing volume produced by stores at Hunan Road was up to 10 billion RMB. However, because of the limited space, enlargement of the original street on the ground is very hard to carry out. Therefore, an underground Hunan Road is to be initiated in the second half of this year.

Located underneath the existing Hunan Road, the underground road is designed to be an ecology-friendly commerce center. Divided into two layers, the second Hunan Road will be about 1,130 meters long and 20 meters wide. When completed, it will be over 80,000 square meters large. Its east end will be connected with Xuanwu Gate Station on metro Line No.1.

According to Xu Suning, governor of Gulou district in Nanjing, design of the underground road has not only made full use of connections with metro Line No.1, Line No.5 and Abover-ground Hunan Road, but also use underground section of the People Square at Shangxi Road as its parking area. When the enlargement construction is completed, as the governor put it, the 1-mile Hunan Road will become a commerce center of one square meter large. By then, its capacity of holding large-scale commercial activities will be immensely increased.
