On 30th October 2008, members of the Banking & Securities Working Group gathered in the offices of the European Chamber of Commerce in China (EUCCC) to discuss the current global financial situation and the state of banking in China.

Mr Hardy Chan (China Tax & Business Advisory Service, PricewaterhouseCoopers) was invited to give a presentation entitled ‘Foreign Banks in China’, the content of which was based on a recently published (June 2008) report into the state of foreign banking enterprises operating in China.

The Chair and Vice-Chair of the Working Group then lead a report on their recent meeting with China Banking Regulatory Commission (CBRC) Chairman Liu Mingkang, which took place in October 2008 in Beijing.

During this meeting the EUCCC’s 2008/2009 Position Paper was presented to the CBRC and the Banking & Securities Working Group representatives were given the opportunity to lobby on the paper’s key recommendations for change in the regulatory environment.

Also present at the meeting was Mr Javier Arribas Quintana of the Delegation of the European Commission to China and Mongolia. He presented his recently composed paper - ‘The global financial crisis: Will China be another victim or a major winner?’ - and lead a discussion surrounding the current financial situation and it’s impact on China.
