Developing open and mature capital markets is essential to supporting China’s economic growth going forward and should therefore be a top priority for both the Chinese leadership and market regulators.
Yet, despite numerous reform pronouncements, the country’s equity, debt and derivatives markets remain underdeveloped. Bank loans remain the dominant source of financing for Chinese companies, and the domestic shadow banking system also still looms large.
The increased volatility we have seen in China’s financial markets over the course of the past year and the poorly communicated stabilization measures that the Chinese regulators hastily developed in response have furthermore shown that many more reforms are still needed. Furthermore, the reactions of international markets have highlighted the ripple effects that China’s capital markets exert on the global financial system, which in turn, have put the onus onto the country’s regulators to speedily push through the needed reforms.
The Financial Services Conference 2016 will see leading executives in China’s financial services sector and international observers review the progress made in reforming the country’s capital markets, assess the impact of recent events, and recommend steps to accelerate reform.

Speakers
Mr. Marco Buti
Marco Buti has been Director-General for Economic and Financial Affairs at the European Commission since December 2008, after a 6-month period as acting Director-General.
After studies at the Universities of Florence and Oxford, Mr. Buti joined the European Commission in 1987. He held various posts as an economist in DG ECFIN and the Commissioner's cabinet (private office) before taking up a post as an economic adviser to the Commission President in 2002-03. In 2003 he returned to DG ECFIN as Director for the Directorate for economies of the Member States, and in September 2006 was appointed Deputy Director-General.
Mr. Buti has been a visiting professor at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, the University of Florence and the European University Institute, and has published extensively on Economic and Monetary Union, macroeconomic policies, welfare state reforms, and European unemployment.
As part of the Commission's commitment to transparency, Directors-General publish information on meetings held with organisations or self-employed individuals.
Prof. Hong Yan
Hong Yan is Professor of Finance at Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance (SAIF), and director for China Hedge Fund Research Center, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, where he served as Deputy Dean and as Deputy Director for China Academy of Financial Research. Before he joined SAIF full-time, Prof. Yan was a tenured faculty member at the Moore School of Business in the University of South Carolina, USA. Previously, he was on the faculty at the University of Texas at Austin and spent a year as a visiting academic scholar at the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC). He also held visiting appointments at the University of Hong Kong, the U.S. Federal Reserve Board and Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business.
Professor Yan holds a Ph.D. in Finance from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Ph.D. in Applied Physics from the University of Michigan. His research focuses on the areas of credit risk, asset pricing, derivatives securities, portfolio choice, and risk management. He also studies financial intermediaries such as mutual funds, hedge funds and financial analysts. Prof. Yan has published in top academic journals such as Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, and Review of Financial Studies. His research has been recognized by the Q-group Grant in 2007, the Crowell Prize in Investment Management in 2010 and a number of Best Paper Awards at international academic conferences.
Professor Yan currently serves as a Managing Editor of the International Review of Finance. He chaired the program committee for the China International Conference in Finance (CICF) in 2013 and 2014, and has served on program committees for several major international conferences. He reviews manuscripts for more than dozen internationally renowned academic journals in economics and finance. In addition, he sits on the advisory boards of several academic and financial institutions and was selected into Shanghai’s “Thousand Talents Plan”.
Ms. Linan Liu
Linan Liu, is a Managing Director, Greater China Macro Strategist based in Hong Kong. She joined Deutsche Bank in 2009. Before joining DB, Linan was Chief Asia Interest Rate Strategist for Morgan Stanley during 2007-2009 and was EM Sovereign Strategist at Credit Suisse Group based in New York and London during 2000–2007. She is primarily responsible for providing macro and micro analysis on the dynamics in the Greater China local currency fixed income markets, evaluating investment opportunities and recommending strategies on asset allocation for a broad range of institutional investors, corporations and governments in Asia, Europe and North America. Her work on China financial reforms, capital account liberalization and RMB internationalization has been widely cited and published. Ms. Liu is frequently quoted in the financial media, including Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Euroweek, Bloomberg, Reuters, Caixin, Xinhua News etc. Linan holds a B.A from Peking University, a MPhil in Economics from New York University and a Master’s from Columbia University.
