On May 28, China's first-ever civil code was approved at the closing meeting of the National People's Congress. Whether you are Chinese or a foreigner living in China, your life might be changed in various ways after the implementation of the civil code. European Chamber Nanjing Chapter decides to host a breakfast meeting to talk about the civil code and how and it will impact daily lives in China.
The civil code, which is said to go into effect in January, covers various fields related to civil affairs, such as property, marriage, family, personal rights, and inheritance. The code is aimed at better protecting individuals’ personal information and property, making it easier to sue for divorce or sexual harassment, and delineating a clearer boundary between markets and the government. The promulgation of Chinese Civil Code in year 2020 has far-reaching influence on every individual’s life in China. If you are a foreigner, you may wonder how you will pay taxes in the future. You will find answers in our panel on the new civil code.
You might also be concerned with how, as an executive of the company, you will operate the business legally. According to the civil code, agency power, which senior executives will usually have, no matter their nationalities, will be regulated by the place where agency activity happens, i.e., China. Accompanying senior executives’ right and freedom to operate enterprise, Civil Code has also developed a series of legal liabilities that are closely related to them.
