Representative Offices have traditionally been a gateway for foreign enterprises to establish a solid presence in the Chinese market because it allowed businesses to limit costs while gaining valuable time to research business strategies before further investment and incorporation. However, the new regulations issued by the Chinese authorities on 4 January 2010, effective from 15 January 2010, increase restrictions and scrutiny over Rep Offices, evidence of a shift in policy by the Chinese Government.
• So what are the implications of such changes for companies operating under this status?
• Will the new rules force foreign enterprises to reconsider their business strategies and operations in China?
• What will be the impact for tomorrow and where are we going too?
