Today's business environment is inscribed within a new and increasingly volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) world. To succeed, companies need to adapt their conventional management methodologies, techniques, and tools to the fast-paced, highly challenging VUCA environment.
The European Chamber is delighted to invite you to a book presentation on "Light Footprint Management", by Charles-Edouard Bouée. Light Footprint Management examines the game-changing firms, leaders, and ideas that are riding these volatile dynamics into a new era of prosperity using methodologies derived from American military doctrine and Chinese management techniques.
- What exactly makes conventional management theories unfit for today's world?
- What insights can business leaders gain from contemporary military discussions about special forces, drone strikes, and cyber warfare? What can they learn from China's successful light footprint entrepreneurs such as Alibaba's Jack Ma and Feng Jun of Huaqi Information Digital Technology (Aigo)?
- What does it take to build and manage a light footprint organization?
A consensus is emerging that, at some time in the relatively recent past, the business environment underwent what amounted to a phase transition, and became too volatile, complex and unpredictable for conventional management approaches to handle. In Charles-Edouard Bouée's forthcoming book "Light Footprint Management: Leadership in times of change", he suggests that companies can learn how to survive and thrive in the new world from recent developments in military doctrine and a new approach to business management emerging in China. The military precedent is illuminating because mainstream military thinking acknowledged, and began adapting to, the new world in the mid-1990s, when students at the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania were told they were preparing for leadership roles in a "Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous" (VUCA) world.
