Prof József Baranyi is the Head of the Computational Microbiology Research Group and the leader of the ComBase@IFR National Capability of the Institute of Food Research in Norwich, UK. He is a Fellow of the International Academy of Food Science and Technology, and a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award of the American Society for Microbiology. Author or co-author of ca 80 refereed research papers, with ca 4000 citations; invited speaker, scientific committee member in numerous international conferences; has coordinated several projects funded by UK government, EU and industry. Held ca 100 predictive microbiology and ComBase workshops all around the world. He was the statistical advisor of Journal of Applied Microbiology between 1996 and 2010 and a member of the Editorial Board of Applied and Environmental Microbiology through 1998-2014. His mathematical model on bacterial growth is one of the most frequently quoted models in predictive microbiology. Co-founder of the ComBase Consortium, 2003.

At Institute of Food Research (IFR), Dr. Pradeep Malakar is an expert on hazards and risks that are associated with food consumption. Management of networking partnerships involving participants from diverse cultural backgrounds has been a significant outcome of Dr. Malakar’s scientific career. He is currently a member of a review panel for the British Council on the Researcher links program and also an external examiner at University Putra Malaysia. Dr Malakar is currently coordinating a UK Department for International Development (DFID) and Chinese Ministry of Agriculture project (MOA) (2014-2016) involving partners in China, UK and Africa. In 2013, Dr Malakar was awarded an “Oriental Scholar Professorship (Dong Fang Scholar)” at Shanghai Ocean University by the Shanghai Department of Education. In 2012, Dr Malakar completed a Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council award (2008) for developing scientific collaborations with China. From 2012 - 2015, Dr Malakar was awarded 3 grants from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), China, for improving scientific collaboration between the UK and China. The Royal Society provided a fellowship for Dr Malakar to organize food safety seminars at University Malaya (2004), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Kasertsat University, Bangkok, Thailand (2006) and Chamber of Turkish Food Engineers Association, TMMOB-GMO, (2006). Dr Malakar was invited as a UK food safety expert to the UK-China Food Safety Workshop, from 10-16 December 2006 in Zhengzhou, Capital City of Henan Province in China. This workshop was co-organised by British Council China, Natural Sciences Foundation of China (NSFC) and Henan Academy of Agricultural Sciences (HAAS).
