The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in China
As a nonprofit, federally owned enterprise, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is active in over 130 countries worldwide, implementing international cooperation projects and measures in the field of sustainable development on behalf of the German Government, as well as other national and international clients (e.g. EU, private enterprises, and foundations). In addition, GIZ is also engaged in the field of professional training around the globe.
With over 30 years of experience implementing projects in the People's Republic of China, GIZ provides policy advice on various topics and sectors relating to China’s reform process, including: environmental protection, sustainable economic development (especially renewable energies and energy efficiency), sustainable urban development, sustainable transport development, vocational training, law, product safety and consumer protection.
The performance profile of GIZ is continually being adapted to the cooperation needs of both countries – within the framework of the “Comprehensive Sino-German Strategic Partnership” – as well as within the framework of the dynamic changes occurring as a part of Chinese reform policies. In addition, GIZ works as both adviser and service provider at the interface between the economic and political spheres. GIZ is also active in those fields in which German actors possess in-depth profiles and competitive advantages, and where German expertise is in high demand.
Sino-German Environmental Partnership Project
Commissioned by German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU), The project Sino-German Environmental Partnership supports the strategic dialogue on policy development and further improvement of China’s environmental governance system and advises on national level the Chinese Ministry of Ecology and Environment (MEE) and the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development (CCICED) on environment and climate related issues.
The project will focus on 4 main outputs. First, the Sino-German strategic environmental policy dialogue continues to be supported. Secondly, policy recommendations are derived from the environmental policy dialogue with key topics available. Thirdly, decision makers, specialists and executives have application-oriented knowledge of modern environmental policy instruments. Lastly, experience and best practices are spread in China and internationally and environmental knowledge is managed effectively. The project team offers demand orientated advice to the key institutions Ministry of Ecology and Environment (MEE) and China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development (CCICED) on developing and implementing effective environmental policy.
The cooperation with MEE supports a dialogue among Chinese and German experts on various operational levels on selected topics of the strategic environmental dialogue in the context of China’s ecological civilization and on relevant core issues of the 13th FYP which currently include air, water, soil pollution control and emission permitting.
The cooperation with the CCICED concretizes the German contribution to CCICED and supports the special working group on climate, environmental, and development issues, with the aim to promote sustainable development in China.
