Job description
Position Overview:
Duke Kunshan University (DKU) is a Sino-US Joint Venture University approved by the Ministry of Education and co-founded by Duke University, Wuhan University and Kunshan City Government. DKU is a non-profit public welfare social organization with independent legal status. The campus is located in Kunshan Yangcheng Lake Science Park, Jiangsu Province. DKU seeks to appoint one lab manager for the Digital Fabrication Lab (Fablab). Working closely with faculty members and lab instructors, the lab manager will support the development of Fablab infrastructure for rapid prototyping, technical knowledge sharing, technology innovation and transfer, outreaching, etc. More broadly, it is also a place to play, to create, to mentor and to invent: a place for learning and innovation. Ideally, it provides access to the environment, the skills, the materials and the advanced technology to allow anyone anywhere to make (almost) anything. The lab manager will be responsible for building, maintaining and upgrading the teaching-related hardware/software/cloud infrastructure, establishing lab protocols, and launching instructional tools for potential users on campus. Successful candidate will receive mentoring in teaching that prepares him/her well for future career development. The innovative undergraduate curriculum at DKU also enables successful candidates to be involved in undergraduate research activities in collaboration with faculty members within the Division of Natural and Applied Sciences. DKU located in Kunshan China, about 30km from Shanghai. DKU offers a series of graduate degree programs and launches its undergraduate degree program in 2018. Our campus provides an innovative, interdisciplinary undergraduate liberal arts experience to a student body that consists of over 2000 students from more than 70 countries and 200+ faculty.

Reports to:
Chair, Division of Natural and Applied Sciences of Undergraduate Program and lab director in corresponding disciplines
Essential Duties:
1. Support in developing and maintaining the daily operation of the lab.
2. Plan and set up a cloud printing service with the support of Office of Information Technology (OIT).
3. Responsible for procurement and setup of equipment such as 3D printers of various types, 3D scanners, machine vision cameras, robot hands, VR/AR/MR devices and relevant control systems.
4. Support projects running on the platform, particularly health and sustainability associated technology development.
5. Build and maintain a website for the lab setup and maintain an internal repository for knowledge sharing.
6. Provide training and technical support for new users of the lab.
7. Maintain material list and order supplies.
8. Promote Fablab Space in various on- and off-campus events.
9. Assist in organizing guided tours, informal user group discussions and formal seminars to facilitate exchange of knowledge.
10. Coordinate with faculty mentors and signature work committee on potential use of DKU Fablab Space in signature work projects.
11. Coordinate with EHS office and other relevant staff members to ensure lab safety.
12. Perform other duties as the lab grows and complexity.
13. University employees' job responsibilities will continue to expand in scope and depth as the University grows in size and complexity in its programs.
Skills & experience
Required Qualifications:
1. A master’s degree in an engineering or design field involving digital fabrication, robotics, human machine interactions or relevant fields.
2. Five years of relevant working experience. Prior involvement in a Fablab or digital fabrication lab is a plus.
3. English speaking and writing skills for effective communication.
4. Programming skills in C++, Python or Matlab for human-machine interface.
5. Strong organizational and communications skills in English and Chinese.
6. Previous knowledge and working experience of CNC, 3D scanning, 3D printing, VR, CAD tools and ROS (Robot operation system) is desirable.
7. Previous training and experience in machine shop is a plus.
8. Previous knowledge of cloud printing services, such as 3DPrinterOS, as well as building Git repository is a plus.
