Job description
Position Overview:
The Dean of Faculty Affairs oversees the Office of Faculty Affairs, which supports all faculty in their scholarship, teaching and professional development at DKU. Primary responsibilities associated with this position include strategic support to the Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs on faculty development, support for faculty development initiatives, oversight for faculty evaluation and reappointment and promotion procedures, and oversight for the development and approval of new or amended faculty-related policies.
Reports to: Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs
Essential Duties:
The Dean of Faculty Affairs coordinates efforts in the Office of Faculty Affairs to oversee the faculty annual evaluation process; supports reappointment and tenure review processes at DKU; serves as an advisor to the VCAA on reappointment, tenure and promotion procedures; responds to questions and concerns about individual reappointment, tenure and promotion cases; oversees faculty mentoring programs; provides oversight for the development of faculty-related policies; maintains the Faculty Handbook; acts as a liaison between the Office of Academic Affairs and the Faculty Assembly; and develops and provides oversight for other faculty development programmes and initiatives.
These duties include the following activities:
Reappointment and Tenure
1. Support faculty reappointment and tenure reviews, such as initiation and communication with candidates; recruitment of review committees in collaboration with division chairs and other academic unit heads; referral of cases to the Senior Advisor to the VCAA for FAC or APT review; ensures timely review and adherence to published schedules.
2. Observe APT deliberations, providing procedural guidance when called upon to offer it by the Chair of APT.
3. Serve as an advisor to Chairs, unit heads and faculty regarding reappointment, tenure and promotion, and address their concerns regarding individual cases or procedure by following up with the VCAA if necessary.
4. Offer workshops on reappointment, tenure and promotion procedures to candidates, Chairs, unit heads and new review committee members.
5. Offer advice to faculty regarding dossier preparation and maintain a library of sample intellectual development statements.
Faculty Development
1. Serve as an ex officio member of the Faculty Assembly Faculty Development Committee, working with its members as a liason to the VCAA and other relevant administrators to advance faculty development.
2. Provide strategic advice to the VCAA on faculty development.
3. Provide oversight and develop programming for the faculty mentoring program.
4. Oversee the coordination of annual faculty reporting and evaluation.
5. Working with Division Chairs, the Assessment office and those designated by the VCAA, develop and maintain instruments for the evaluation of teaching.
6. Collaborate with relevant committees to develop policies, guidelines and procedures that support faculty advancement (e.g. sabbatical, course buyout, summer compensation etc.).
7. Work with the DKU Faculty Assembly and the VCAA in the development of faculty-related policies, and oversee the approval process of new and amended faculty-related policies in collaboration with the Chancellor’s Office.
8. Maintain the Faculty Handbook and ensure its consistency with other academic policies.
9. Coordinate the collection and review of sabbatical applications
10. Oversee the Faculty Scholarship and Travel Award (application collection and review, and allocation of funds)
11. Oversee coordination of appointments to non-faculty assembly committees, and track faculty membership on committees.
12. Oversee support for long-term and visiting faculty and their families.
13. Perform other duties as assigned.
14. University employees' job responsibilities will continue to expand in scope and depth as the University grows in size and complexity in its programs.
Skills & experience
Qualifications:
Education:
1. Ph.D. degree or doctoral equivalent degree required.
Experience:
1. At least 15 years of relevant work experience in higher education, with at least two years as a tenured faculty member. Previous and substantial experience with rank and tenure procedures is strongly preferred.
2. Experience of leading a small team as well as developing junior staff members is strongly preferred.
3. Experience of working in a multicultural environment is strongly preferred, as is adaptation to work in a fast-paced international institution.
4. Experience of developing and managing office budgets is preferred.
5. Proven ability to balance the needs of various stakeholders (mostly internal).
6. A problem-solver, quick learner and sophisticated communicator.
