Through a mix of social media, digital content, and public diplomacy activities, the project aims to improve the EU’s image and credibility, particularly among Chinese youth, opinion leaders, and cultural institutions.
Job description
Location: P.R. China, Beijing (preferably) with possibilities of travel nationally
Type of Employment: Part-time (10 days a month, indicative and flexible)
Reporting to: Team Leader/ Key Expert 2
The Public and Cultural Diplomacy in China (EU POP China) Team is seeking a highly motivated and creative Cultural Diplomacy & Events Specialist to assist in its public and cultural diplomacy efforts.
As part of a dynamic team, the selected candidate will support the EUPOP Project team in its efforts to enhance the perception, understanding, and attractiveness of the EU among Chinese audiences, particularly in the areas of EU values, policies, and cultural cooperation. The successful candidate will have a strong background in international relations, excellent communication skills, and the ability to navigate complex political landscapes. Key responsibilities include organizing cultural events and managing public outreach campaigns. The role requires a proactive approach to problem-solving, a deep understanding of global affairs, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment. Main Responsibilities:
· Cultural Diplomacy Initiatives
- Design and implement cultural diplomacy projects that highlight the EU’s cultural diversity, inclusiveness, and shared heritage.
- Organize exhibitions, festivals, performances, and artistic collaborations that foster mutual understanding and intercultural dialogue between EU Member States and Chinese cultural institutions.
o Engage with Chinese cultural operators, academic institutions, and civil society organizations to promote long-term partnerships and cultural cooperation.
o Develop and maintain such network of contacts.
o Collaborate with EU Member State cultural institutes and embassies to co-organize cultural events that emphasize EU-China cooperation.
o Identify opportunities for the EU to participate in Chinese cultural programs, leveraging these platforms to promote the EU.
· Event Organization & Management
o Plan, coordinate, and execute cultural events such as festivals, exhibitions, conferences, and performances across China.
o Handle event logistics, including venue selection, coordination with artists, curators, and performers, and managing technical and administrative aspects.
o Ensure events align with EU policy objectives
o Work with local partners to facilitate EU participation in Chinese cultural events and festivals, enhancing the visibility of the EU's cultural contributions.
· Stakeholder Engagement
o Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including cultural organizations, universities, government entities, and civil society groups.
o Engage with cultural operators, artists, and intellectuals to foster collaboration and partnership on cultural diplomacy initiatives
o Monitor developments in the Chinese cultural landscape, identifying trends and opportunities for future EU-China cultural collaboration.
o Engage with Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) and influencers to amplify the EU’s message across different platforms.
Skills & experience
Education:
o Bachelor’s degree in cultural studies, international relations, event management, or a related field. A postgraduate qualification is desirable.
Experience:
o 3-5 years of experience in organizing cultural events, exhibitions, or festivals, preferably in an international context.
o Proven experience working in cultural diplomacy or public diplomacy, with a focus on fostering cross-cultural understanding and cooperation.
o Strong knowledge of the Chinese cultural sector, including networks within academia, cultural institutions, and civil society.
o High proficiency in both English and Mandarin Chinese.
o Previous experience in planning and executing public events and conferences.
Skills & Competencies:
o Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
o Excellent event management and project coordination skills, with the ability to manage large-scale cultural events from conception to execution. Familiar with local rules and administration in China.
o Strong networking and relationship-building skills, especially within the cultural sector.
o Ability to navigate complex cultural and political landscapes, particularly in the context of EU-China relations.
o Strong problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to addressing logistical and strategic challenges.
o Commitment to promoting cultural understanding and cooperation.
o A collaborative team player with a strong willingness to learn and contribute.
o Familiarity with EU policies and cultural diplomacy strategies is a plus.
o Knowledge of relevant office technology and computer software
