Both the EU and US are negotiating Bilateral Investment Treaties with China. This is happening at a time when China is trying to move up the innovation ladder to accelerate growth and also expanding its outward flows of direct investment. The result is heightened tensions about technology issues and IPR theft. How should one interpret the factors driving investment relations between China and the EU/US and its implications for both sides?

Yukon Huang is a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment in Washington D.C. He was formerly the World Bank’s Country Director for China and earlier Russia. He is an advisor to the World Bank, ADB, AIIB and various governments and corporations. His current research focuses on China’s economy and its regional and global impact. Dr. Huang has published widely on development issues in professional journals and the public media. His articles on China are seen frequently in the New York Times, Financial Times, Wall Street Journal,Bloomberg, Foreign Affairs, Diplomat and Caixin. His latest book Cracking the China Conundrum: Why Conventional Economic Wisdom Is Wrong was published by Oxford University Press (2017). He has a PhD in economics from Princeton University and a BA from Yale University.
