Trade and Distribution WG Seminar
Sourcing in China – Issues of Quality and Compliance
Sourcing competitively and effectively has become one of the most important business challenges nowadays. China, due to the relatively low expenses in labour, raw materials and facilities, has become the world’s leading manufacturer in many categories, particularly in producing consumer goods. It continues to create a strong supply base for European Companies. However, there are still various concerns in consistency and reliability of Chinese suppliers. To that effect the European Chamber Trade & Distribution Working Group was delighted to hold a seminar to give members a chance to listen to some best practice. Moderated by the Vice Chair of the Working Group, Tim Lamb, the seminar looked principally at two perspectives: quality and compliance.
Dr. Guenther Lammersdorf, Asian Director of Drozak Consulting spoke first, outlining the common success factors for sourcing in China. Companies not only need to establish and implement effective control and monitoring systems at different points along the sourcing process, but at the same time should be aware of the cultural differences in business communication, the ‘soft’ success factors. He concluded in order to achieve quality sourcing a company needs time, patience, trust, knowledge and experience. To view his presentation, please click here
Mr. Frank Piller, GM of Business Stream Products at TUV Rheinland (Shanghai) continued on the same theme from another perspective, explaining how Chinese suppliers can meet the standards and requirements of the directives for European markets. He suggested companies should pay attention to four aspects: the varying requirements of different regions, the needs of product evaluation, the product quality issues inside the EU, and especially supplier assessment and development. This was the sixth seminar this year in the area of sourcing/procurement/supply chain. The Chamber thanks all those who spoke and attended, and looks forward to providing more quality events in this area over the coming months.
