Until World War II, 19 different legal system operated in Shanghai depending on the nationality. American courts for Americans, French courts for the French, British courts for the British - A Mixed Court for the Chinese.
Shanghai Lawyer Allman held many positions in his 30 years in China: Diplomat, lawyer, judge, soldier, spy, spymaster – to name just a few. Shanghai Lawyer is Allman’s first-hand account of his amazing 27 years in China from 1914 to the Japanese occupation of Shanghai in 1941, including his time as a judge of Mixed Court and the Mexican consular court.
In this event, Douglas Clark will tell us about Allman’s extraordinary life in China as well his later life as a spymaster in the OSS and CIA in America and back in China as communist troops occupied Shanghai.
Doug is himself a “Shanghai Lawyer” having studied and practiced here for over 13 years. He is also the author of the Gunboat Justice a history of the British and American Courts in Shanghai. Doug also served as European Chamber IPR Working Group Chairman.
