The European Chamber is delighted to welcome Dr Yukon Huang, senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment and a former World Bank Director for China, to share some of the ideas that underpin his upcoming book “Cracking the China Conundrum: Why Conventional Economic Wisdom is wrong”. Dr Huang's is a leading expert on China-US relations and an 'A-list commentator' for the Financial Times on China. His annual visit to the Chamber is always one of the highlights on the event calendar.
Huang will focus on three main challenges facing China in the coming years; US-China trade tensions, China’s growth and debt dilemma, and the implications of Xi’s corruption campaign. In discussing these issues Huang will raise and elaborate on three core contentions.
- America’s trade deficit with China doesn’t matter
- China’s debt problem is overstated; but sustaining growth will be difficult
- Xi’s corruption campaign is failing to tackle the major systemic causes and has implications for growth and political liberalization
