The first freight train from China to the UK has started its 12,000 mile journey from Yiwu in the east of China to London. China is reviving the historic Silk Road trade route that runs between its own borders and Europe, establishing a network of enhanced overland and maritime economic corridors, extending between China and Europe.
There are strong geopolitical forces at play here, first among which is China’s industrial overcapacity, for which the new trade route would serve as an outlet. Opening new trade markets could go a long way towards keeping China's economy buoyant. China is wooing its neighbors with promises of new roads, railways and power grids; Chinese trade and investment and its ability to build infrastructure could present good opportunities in the development of some of the world's most undeveloped countries.
The European Chamber is delighted to welcome Tom Miller, Senior analyst at Gavekal Research, as he shares his perspective on the question: What does China's rise mean for the future of Asia?
