In Europe, Europe Day is a celebration to foster unity among Europeans. The basic ideas behind the European Union were put forward on 9 May 1950 by the French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Robert Schuman, he set out his idea for a new way of political cooperation in Europe, which would make conflict between European Union members unthinkable.
