Building on the success of 1st European Chamber Sustainable Business Awards, the European Chamber Shanghai Chapter is pleased to announce the second edition of its Sustainable Business Awards to be held on 19th September 2018. Please read more below to learn about the different stages.

The Sustainable Business Awards are open to members of the Shanghai Chapter of the European Chamber.

In partnership with SYNTAO as our knowledge partner, and with our media partner, Shanghai Daily, the Awards aim to acknowledge innovation leadership achievements, raise sustainability awareness, and share the responsible business model experiences with organizations looking to embrace responsible business competition in China. The European Chamber believes that there is an urgent need for enterprises to build a sustainable business model which integrates social and environmental responsibilities into commercial activities and makes competitive responsibility a strong driver for future development which goes along with the EU 2020 targets and China’s long-term Sustainable Development Goals under China’s new leadership.

Mrs. Cindy Zhang
Since August in 2006, Cindy Zhang has been responsible for communications strategy and plans, including sustainability communications for Stora Enso in China. In addition, she also focuses on developing and maintaining partnership with target associations, chambers and NGOs from global to domestic in order to support branding in sustainability and bring benefits to target audience. Before that, Cindy takes different roles which ranges from sales to marketing from 1998 to 2006.
Dr. Manfred Aben
Dr. Manfred Aben
Manfred holds a PhD in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Amsterdam. He joined Unilever in 1995 in The Netherlands, developing Knowledge Based Systems. He established the Unilever Knowledge Management Group, that
helped Unilever (and other companies) to be a Learning Organisation. From 2004, as R&D Programme Director for the Savoury Category, Manfred shaped technology platforms for Dry and Wet soups and sauces, and he led the “Jelly Bouillon” innovation, which first launched in China and then globally to became one of Unilever Foods most successful innovations.Manfred subsequently led the Global Development Centre for Structured Emulsions to deliver breakthrough innovations in Margarine and Dressings.
In 2011, Manfred moved with his family to Singapore, where he headed the R&D program and team for Unilever’s Foodservice business in Asia, Africa and the Middle East, leading cross-cultural teams across nine countries.
In 2014 he moved to Jakarta to become Personal Care Deploy Director for Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, driving successful launches of new innovations, whilst driving operational efficiency, quality and compliance.
From 2016, Manfred heads the Shanghai R&D lab, one of Unilever’s six global R&D labs. Manfred is convinced that the challenges facing business and societies alike, require novel ways of creative collaboration and fast deployment of new
technologies. Developing R&D leaders for the future is a key part of his mission. Manfred is married with two sons. In his spare time, he loves to cook (as a strict vegetarian), exercise and play video games with his sons.
Mr. Mats Harborn
Mr. Mats Harborn
Mr Mats Harborn is President of Scania China.
From May 2017 to May 2019 Mats Harborn was the President of the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China. He had served on the Chamber's Executive Committee since 2013, as Vice President and as States' Representative.
Mr. Harborn has been actively involved in Sino-European trade and business relations. In 2005, he was appointed as the Chairman of Swedish Chamber of Commerce in China, a position he held for 8 years. He has been the Chairman China Commercial Vehicles Board of ACEA (European Automobile Manufacturers' Association) since 2010.
Mr. Harborn has a proven record of successful introductions of products and companies into China over years. He is now the Executive Director of Scania China Strategic Office, responsible for setting strategies and paving the way for high end CV sales. He joined the company as the Managing Director of Scania China Representative office as well as Scania Sales (China) Co., Ltd in 2004 and held that position until 2010. From 1997 to 2000, he had been working for Swedish Embassy in Beijing as Commerical Councelor, a key position in Sino-Swedish commercial relations. In June 2000, he became the Marketing and Information Director of Ecolean AB, helping establish Ecolean as a credible business partner in juice and dairy industry and define it as a sustainable packaging solutions provider.
Mr. Harborn received a bachelor degree from Lund University on Oriental Studies and Business Admin (1984), and a training course from The Institute of Leadership (IFL) (2008).
As a multilingual user, Mr. Harborn has a wide ranging knowledge of Chinese culture and society beyond his business and rich expertise in cross-cultural management.
Dr. Angelina Prokofyeva

Dr. Angelina Prokofyeva graduated from the National Taras Shevchenko University in Kiev and obtained her Ph.D. in chemistry at the Georg-August University Goettingen in Germany.
After a Postdoc stay at CAT Catalytic Center at the RWTH Aachen University she entered Bayer Technology Services in 2010 as a research and project manager. Since 2016 she is working in the area of Sustainable Development at Covestro and recently moved to Shanghai as Head of Sustainability Greater China.
Mr. Allan Gabor
Mr. Allan Gabor
E. Allan Gabor is president of Merck China, and managing director of Merck Performance Materials China. He is also a permanent member of Merck’s Performance Materials Leadership Team, responsible for China. As president of Merck China, he is responsible for developing and driving growth strategies in this key country and building on the company’s 350-year presence and reputation. China is considered one of the Group’s strategic countries, with all three business sectors of Merck developing rapidly in the market.
Prior to this role, he was the president of Asia Pacific for Biopharma, Merck Group from 2016 to 2018. Before 2016, he was the president and chief executive officer for Merck’s Biopharma business in China, and was instrumental in expanding Merck’s Asian footprint. This was achieved through a series of investments, including establishing Merck’s new EUR170 million world-class pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Nantong, Jiangsu Province, as well as building an extensive network with leading academic and medical institutions for collaborations.
Before joining Merck, Mr Gabor spent 25 years at Pfizer in leadership roles including chair and general manager for China, and regional president for North Asia, Russia, India, Turkey and Eastern Europe. Mr Gabor successfully launched many of Pfizer's innovative medicines in China, and opened the China Regional Investment Centre and a state-of-the-art research and development centre in Shanghai.
In recognition of his tireless contribution towards the economic construction, social development and international exchange and cooperation of Shanghai, Mr Gabor has been awarded the Magnolia (Baiyulan) Award twice by the Shanghai Municipal Government.
Mr Gabor holds a BA in Communications from the College of Wooster and pursued further education at the University of Tennessee and Harvard Business School.
Mr. Francis Sum
Mr. Francis Sum
Francis Sum has been as President of Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) Region China since 2014. He is responsible for all strategic planning, market development and other relevant business activities for Volvo CE in the China and Mongolia market.
Francis has over thirteen years of experience with the Volvo Group. Before his appointment as Volvo CE Region China President, Francis accumulated extensive experience and exhibited a unique perspective on the Chinese market. In 2005, Francis became President of Volvo Financial Services (VFS) in China. As VFS China President, Francis led his team to successfully establish Volvo Group’s first financial services company in Asia, during which time he formulated a comprehensive operating structure and established a mature business model within the company. Over the following eight years, the company flourished in the Chinese market under Francis’s leadership. He also successfully drove Volvo CE’s sustained growth in China by forging close working relationships between the Volvo CE China management team and dealer network.
In 2013, Francis served as Vice President of VFS Region APAC, during which time he was primarily responsible for strategy, marketing and business development. In addition to exploring and developing new markets in the Asia-Pacific, Francis also continued to lead VFS business to achieve steady growth in China.
Francis holds a master’s degree in Applied Economics and a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the National University of Singapore.

Lydia J. Price is Professor of Marketing at CEIBS. From 2006-2012 she was Associate Dean and Director of the CEIBS MBA Programme. Under her leadership the programme deepened its international focus and stature as well as its China expertise, rising steadily in major business school rankings as a consequence. In 2009 she implemented a major curriculum change that strengthened the programme’s commitment to Responsible Leadership and Sustainability, including an innovative mandatory course in which students complete sustainability field projects in the China context. Several of these student projects have earned global awards and accolades from the corporate and academic communities.
Professor Price is an award winning professor of marketing with more than 20 years’ experience teaching Chinese executives and MBA students. Her current teaching and research interests lie in the area of responsible leadership and marketing strategy. Prior to joining CEIBS, Professor Price was on the faculties of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and INSEAD, France. She also has been a visiting professor at New York University, Beijing University, and Catholic University of Lisbon, Portugal. Professor Price holds a PhD in Marketing from Columbia University, an MS in Marketing Research from University of Cincinnati, and a BS in Marketing from Miami University.

Dr. Lu Jian Zhong, board member of Global Reporting Initiative GRI and Deputy Director General of China CSR Think Tank, deputy chairman of Shanghai Foreign Invested Association. He performed many senior executive roles for more than 20 years in a variety of industry sectors and multinational companies, such as President General Affairs Essilor Greater China, President China of The Weir Group, and Global Partner of Brunswick Group, Executive Vice President of Singapore RGE Group (China) and Chief Representative, Chairman of RGE subsidiary Asia Symbol Paper & Pulp Ltd, Vice President of RGE Subsidiary Sateri Group Ltd., Acting President China of BHP Billiton Group. In his roles of leading China operation in the companies, he integrated corporate social responsibility and sustainability into company’s strategy and day to day operations realizing social value alongside financial value, he helped the companies achieve business growth, operational excellence, and corporate image as well as talent development. Dr. Lu acquired solid professional expertise in enterprise management, commercial operations, leading corporate strategy, business growth, market expansion, organizational and leadership development, corporate branding and strategic communications, employee engagement, and company culture advancement.
Dr Lu is a well-konwn pioneer of sustainable business strategy and well-respected industry thought leader, with profound and systematic practical expertise and theoretical methodologies.
Dr. Guo Peiyuan
Dr. Guo Peiyuan
Dr. Guo Peiyuan co-founded SynTao in 2005 and has served as the General Manager since then. After development of over a decade, SynTao has become a leading sustainability consulting firm in China with clients covering multinational companies and Chinese local companies.
Dr.GUO holds a Ph.D. in Management and a Bachelor Degree of Environmental Engineering from Tsinghua University. He is an expert on corporate environment management, responsible investment and green economy. He is a committee member for Energy Efficiency and Emission Control Verification Committee of China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment, and a founding member for Green Finance Committee of China Society for Finance and Banking. Dr.GUO is also knowledgeable about UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and has been invited by UNDP China as a lecturer for UNDP SDGs Online Course.
Dr. Guo teaches an MBA course Business Performance and Sustainability in School of Economics and Management, Tsinghua University, and international student course Social Innovation and CSR in School of Social Development and Public Policy, Beijing Normal University.
Dr. Xuanwei Cao

Dr Cao is an associate professor of management at International Business School at Suzhou (IBSS), Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU). Dr Cao’s research interest, at the intersection of strategy and sustainability, include corporate environmental strategy, corporate sustainability, sustainable entrepreneurship and sustainable innovation. Since 2008, he has conducted one NSFC research project and ten contracted consulting research projects for Suzhou government as principal investigator. Currently, he is supervising a Ph.D student focusing on research of entrepreneurial orientation, corporate environmental strategy and performance. Dr Cao is the honorary "Middle-Aged Academic Leadership" awarded by 'Qing-Lan Project' of the Education Department of Jiangsu Province.
In the past years, Dr Cao pioneered many innovative teaching practices in XJTLU. He has developed broad international collaborations on research and teaching. Dr Cao is the visiting researcher at Institute of China Business and Economy of University of Würzburg and Centre for Sustainable Management of University of Lüneburg, Germany.
Within IBSS of XJTLU, Dr Cao is the team leader of PRME (Principles of Responsible Management Education) working group. Dr Cao is also the founder, convener and host of PRME China Signatories Sustainability Management Education Roundtable Forum, an annual event of PRME signatories for promoting sustainability management education in business schools. Beyond IBSS, Dr Cao keeps close engagement with businesses in Suzhou and Shanghai. Dr Cao is a special invited consultant by Suzhou Industrial Park CSR Alliance.
Mr. Hui Zhang

Mr. Zhang Hui served as the CSR and sustainability leader in multiple Fortune 500 companies, leading the development and evolution of CSR strategies and driving signature campaigns across regional and international markets. Since 2014, Mr. Zhang has taken the CSR Forum Chair and Vice Chair role of European Union Chamber of Commerce Shanghai Chapter, fostering the cross-sector CSR and sustainability collaboration on the European Chamber CSR Forum platform. He also contributed his knowledge and experience by serving as the CSR Think Tank expert of China Federation of Industrial Economics, lecturer of Syntao Academy and universities, CSR advisor of UNAIDS, UNDP and ILO in China in the past years.
