The Central Economic Work Conference (CEWC) is the Party leadership’s annual gathering where they discuss the state of China’s economy and outline policies that need to be implemented over the next 12 months. In previous years this Conference first outlined the concept of supply side reform (2015) and viewing the economy as an extension of national security (2016). With the continuation of the trend of increased Party leadership in matters of development, outcomes from this year’s Conference are sure to directly impact the real economy in 2018 and beyond.
Hot on the heels of the 19th Party Congress, the 2017 CEWC, held December 18th-20th, looked to expand on the economic roadmap put forward in President Xi’s work report identifying three “critical battles” that must be won: controlling financial sector risk, alleviating poverty, and tackling pollution. A time frame of three years was set to meet this ambitious program.
The European Chamber is delighted to welcome leading experts on the Chinese economy, Chen Xingdong, Arthur Kroeber and Tom Orlik, to share their take on the CWEC and on China’s economic outlook.
