Corporate venture capital (CVC) differs from independent venture capital (VC) in several ways when it comes to how it nurtures innovation in new firms and what metrics a CVC fund regards as important. Whereas the objective of a common VC fund may simply be to get an attractive financial return, CVC funds are generally more focused on the strategic fit of any potential investment with their companies’ own strategic orientation.
At the European Chamber’s Corporate Venture Capital Conference 2018, managers of CVC funds, advisers and academics will talk about what makes a CVC unit successful, what deals these units are looking at in their respective sectors – information technology and life sciences, among others – and what they think about this sector’s potential in China.

Speakers
Prof. S. Ramakrishna Velamuri
S. Ramakrishna (Rama) Velamuri is Professor of Entrepreneurship and Chengwei Ventures Chair in Entrepreneurship at the China Europe International Business School (CEIBS) where he teaches classes on Entrepreneurship, Negotiation and Business Ethics. Rama’s two main areas of research are: i) the relationship between the ethical behaviours of entrepreneurs and their ability to mobilize stakeholder support; and ii) the relationship between business model innovations and firm growth. His research has been published in academic and practitioner journals.
In the corporate world, Rama has six years’ experience as a manager in a large European manufacturing company, and eight years’ experience as a consultant to US, Indian and Spanish clients. He has experience as an investor, board member and advisor to entrepreneurial companies. He has also worked with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the National Entrepreneurship Network India in the area of entrepreneurship faculty development.
A former faculty member at IESE Business School, he has a BCom degree from the University of Madras, an MBA from IESE Business School and a PhD from the Darden Graduate School of Business, University of Virginia.
Mr. Jannis Busch
Jannis was born and raised in and by Bayer Pharmaceuticals, career-wise. Being a business and computer scientist by training he worked for Bayer’s digital development during the rise of the buzzword “digital transformation” and built up Grants4Apps from an organic grassroots project into a globally renowned startup support program with a team of 5. He is responsible for Grants4Apps Asia.
Mr. Markus Solibieda
Markus Solibieda joined BASF Venture Capital GmbH as a Managing Director in 2016 with a prior 20 year investment experience. Following his international studies in Business Administration in Germany, France and the US, he started his career with DBAG, the now independent prior private equity division of Deutsche Bank. Markus executed Growth Capital and Private Equity transactions for Advent International and 3i and subsequently co-founded Baigo Capital. As shareholder and CFO, he led the IPO of the smart-card company ACG. Before taking over responsibilities at BASF Venture Capital, Markus headed the Frankfurt office of Mandarin Capital and led private investments in Venture Capital, Growth Capital and Private Equity.
Mr. Chris C. Pu
Chris joined Telstra Ventures in mid 2015 to lead its China investments. Chris brings more than 20 years of experience in direct investment and business development with on-the-ground investment practices in China, Korea, Taiwan, India, Malaysia and the US. Most recently, Chris worked at Intel Capital Silicon Valley office and Beijing office, focusing on mobile, communications and internet services investments in China and Asia, prior to that he co-founded a venture fund based in Silicon Valley. Chris has a significant investment track record in Asia and the US including several major exits in acquisitions and IPOs.
Chris holds an MBA from the Wharton School of Business, a MS in Control Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a BS in Engineering from TsingHua University in Taiwan.
Mr. Chris Bailey
Chris has managed IPR strategy, management and enforcement programmes in China for over 20 years in a range of industries, including automotive, healthcare, agriculture, environment, consumer packaged goods and industrial automation.
Chris has in-depth knowledge and experience of enforcement and litigation in China, and was one of the founders of the CIELA IP litigation database. Chris also advises clients on their IP strategy, use of internal and external resources, benchmarking and budgeting, and aspects of commercial strategy that impact on IP management.
He has more recently assisted technology clients with IP commercialisation and transactions in China, and heads up Rouse's Ventures team, which focuses on bringing technology start-ups and SME's into China, helping them find partners and sources of capital.
Mr. Tytus Michalski
Tytus Michalski is a co-founder and Managing Partner of Fresco Capital. Previously, he was Chief Investment Officer of Equities at PMA Investment Advisors, an institutional Asia Pacific hedge fund, managing the equity funds and the equity team. He was a co-founder of PMA, which was started in 2002 and acquired in 2006 while in the process of scaling up to US$3B in assets under management. Before that, he was focused on equity investment with HSBC Asset Management in Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, and London.
Tytus graduated from the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia (Finance with Honours) and is a Leslie Wong Fellow alumnus of the UBC Portfolio Management Foundation. He is also a founding Board Director of the UBC Sauder Alumni Club of Hong Kong and holds the CFA designation. In his spare time, Tytus enjoys training and teaching traditional Okinawan karate as a third degree black belt.
