The annual two sessions of the National People’s Congress (NPC) and the China People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) got underway last week in Beijing. With much pressing business now signed off, these sessions are moving towards conclusion and leaving a clearer picture of the government's priorities for the coming year.
At the opening of the NPC, Premier Li’s work report echoed many of the key outcomes that emerged from the 19th Party Congress. Growth targets were confirmed at “around 6.5 per cent,” while significant emphasis was again placed on the three critical battles with Premier Li stating that “a moderately prosperous society cannot arise with volatile financial markets, people locked in poverty, or polluted skies, mountains and rivers.”
Kerry Brown, director of the Lau China Institute at King’s College London, Andrew Polk, co-founder of Trivium/China, and Professor Zhang Jian, Associate Professor at Peking University School of Government, share their insights on the ongoing lianghui meetings, the now approved constitutional changes and what businesses can expect as the lines between the Party and the government continue to blur.
