On 1 August 2018, the Chinese legal community celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Anti-Monopoly Law (AML), China's main competition law.
During the course of 2018, China also implemented one of the largest re-organizations of regulatory authorities in modern Chinese legal history. In the competition law field, the re-structuring brought about the merger of the prior three competition authorities (i.e., specialized divisions within the Ministry of Commerce, the National Development and Reform Commission, and the State Administration for Industry and Commerce) into a single unit within the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR).
With these two key developments, it is now the right time to look back – at what kind of competition law enforcement we saw during the first 10 years of the AML's effectiveness – and then look forward – at what the future may bring in terms of competition law enforcement. The European Chamber is delighted to welcome prominent commentator Adrian Emch, partner at law firm Hogan Lovells in Beijing, to share his views.
