Dear Pharmaceutical Working Group Members,
On 17 January 2019, China’s State Council officially release the Notice on the Pilot Scheme for Centralized Procurement and Use of Drugs Organized by the State. Pharma industry’s sweet dream about the expansion of the national reimbursement drug list and possibilities of the committed volumes from the “4+7” procurement pilot has turned to a nightmare as the dramatic price discounts reported in and draconian implementations ensued.
• How are the volume-based procurement being implemented and monitored?
• Is this pilot considered a success?
• What is likely to come next?
• What will happen to the off-patent-originators, the bread and butter of most international pharma’s revenue base?
• How should pharmas reconsider their business models and go-to-market strategies?
In the upcoming working group meeting, speakers from L.E.K. will share their research-to-date on this current topic and facilitate the WG’s discussion on whether and how pharmas might need to reset their expectations of the China market.
